BC Fish Species
Rockfish
Rockfish are a diverse group of species found along British Columbia’s rugged coastline, known for their vibrant colors and strong connection to rocky reefs and underwater structure. From bright orange yelloweye to deep black rockfish, each species brings its own character to the ocean.
Highly valued for their flaky white meat, rockfish are a favorite among recreational anglers. They require careful, sustainable fishing practices due to their long lifespans and slower growth rates, making them an important part of BC’s marine ecosystem.

Halibut
Pacific halibut are one of British Columbia’s most prized bottom fish, known for their massive size, firm white flesh, and unique flat-bodied shape. Perfectly adapted to life on the ocean floor, halibut use natural camouflage to blend into sandy and gravelly bottoms, lying in wait to ambush prey.
Anglers target halibut for both the challenge and the reward. These powerful fish can reach well over 100 pounds, offering an unforgettable fight and some of the best eating on the coast. Found throughout BC’s offshore waters, halibut are a staple of West Coast fishing experiences.

Salmon
Salmon are at the heart of British Columbia’s fishing culture, drawing anglers from around the world. Species like Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Pink, and Chum each offer unique fishing opportunities, from powerful ocean runs to iconic freshwater migrations.
Renowned for their strength and endurance, salmon deliver exciting fights and exceptional table quality. Their lifecycle—from ocean to river and back again—makes them not only a prized catch, but a symbol of the West Coast’s natural heritage.

Steelhead
Steelhead are ocean-going rainbow trout that return to British Columbia’s rivers, prized for their beauty, power, and unpredictability. Often referred to as the ultimate game fish, steelhead are known for explosive strikes and acrobatic fights.
Unlike other salmonids, steelhead can spawn multiple times, adding to their mystique and resilience. Their chrome-bright bodies in saltwater and vibrant colors in freshwater make them a stunning and sought-after catch for anglers chasing a true West Coast challenge.

Trout
Trout are one of the most accessible and rewarding freshwater species in British Columbia, found in lakes, rivers, and streams across the province. Popular varieties include rainbow, cutthroat, and brook trout, each offering unique patterns, colors, and behaviors.
Perfect for anglers of all experience levels, trout provide consistent action and scenic fishing opportunities in some of BC’s most beautiful landscapes. Whether casting from shore or drifting a quiet river, trout fishing is a timeless West Coast tradition.
